Winooski may be the smallest city in Vermont by area, but it packs more people per square mile than anywhere else in the state. Wrapped in a bend of the Winooski River just across from Burlington, the "Onion City" has transformed its old mill district into a lively, walkable downtown centered on the roundabout.

Winooski's roofs tell the story of a former mill town: closely-spaced early-1900s homes, plenty of two- and three-unit multi-family houses, and the landmark Champlain Mill anchoring a downtown of converted brick and modern mixed-use buildings. It's one of the most diverse communities in Vermont, with a large and growing New American population.
That density is exactly what makes roofing here its own craft. Lots are tight, houses sit close together, and staging a tear-off takes planning — you can't just park a dumpster anywhere. The roofs themselves tend to be older and steeper, which means ice dams and worn flashing are common, and access matters as much as the shingles.
